As winter vacation in schools comes to an end, students in Jammu and Kashmir are gearing up for the annual examinations across various classes. The completion of these examinations will allow for an early start of the new academic session, as ordered by the government last year.

Traditionally, the annual examinations were held in October-November, with new classes commencing soon after the results were declared. However, due to changes in the academic session, examinations will now take place in March in soft zones, and in late March and April in hard zones.

While the winter has been relatively mild in the plain areas, heavy snowfall in higher reaches has been reported several times this season. If weather conditions remain favourable in the coming weeks, the examination process is expected to begin smoothly and conclude on time.

The School Education Department has directed the completion of examinations for all junior classes by March 20, a welcome step. However, authorities must ensure that examination centres have proper heating arrangements in case of inclement weather. Students should not have to suffer in the cold during examinations, as this can negatively affect their performance. Allegations of lack of heating arrangements during recruitment examinations for government posts led to a shift of these exams to March. The School Education Department must ensure that students do not face similar problems.

It is hoped that not only will examinations for junior classes be conducted as scheduled, but those for 10th, 11th, and 12th classes will also commence and conclude on time. Regardless of soft or hard zones, the new academic session must start on schedule.

Due to COVID-19-related lockdowns over the past few years, students have already lost a lot of time. While online classes have been used as an alternative, efforts must be made to cover the syllabus, particularly in higher classes, during the academic session in both government and private schools.
