No homework for students upto Class-II”: DSEK issues homework schedule

Srinagar, Apr 13 (PK): The School Education Department of Kashmir has issued a circular announcing a new homework schedule for students. As per the circular, students up to Class-II will have no homework, while students in Classes III to V will have a maximum of two hours of homework per week. Middle school students in Classes VI to VIII will have a maximum of one hour of homework per day, equivalent to five to six hours per week. Secondary and higher secondary level students will have a maximum of two hours of homework per day.

The circular emphasizes the need for teachers to coordinate and rationalize the amount of homework assigned to students, as often multiple teachers assign homework for the same class, resulting in a heavy burden on students. The decision aims to reduce the workload on students and promote a healthy balance between studies and other activities.

The circular also highlights that the School Education Department has received feedback that homework assignments are not coordinated among teachers, leading to an excessive workload for students. Therefore, all government and private schools are instructed to strictly adhere to the homework schedule as per the School Bag Policy 2020.

The implementation of the new homework schedule has been met with mixed reactions from stakeholders in the education sector.

While some have praised the decision as a positive step towards reducing academic stress, others have expressed concerns about its potential impact on students’ learning and exam preparation. However, parents and students have largely welcomed the decision, viewing it as an opportunity for students to have more time for recreational activities, hobbies, and self-care.

As schools and teachers implement the new homework schedule, it will be closely monitored by stakeholders in the education community to assess its effectiveness in reducing the homework burden on students while maintaining the quality of education.
