Cancer Cases Surge in Jammu and Kashmir: GMC Anantnag Records Over 1,000 Patients in 3 Years

Srinagar, Nov 15 (PK) – The Department of Radiation Oncology at GMC-associated hospital Janglat Mandi Anantnag has witnessed a significant uptick, registering around 1,000 cancer patients in the past three years, according to news agency.

A recent cancer awareness event at GMC Anantnag showcased the department’s dedication. Dr Faizan Gul highlighted that over 1,200 chemotherapy sessions, valued at over one crore rupees, were completed, extending free treatment to most patients under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Principal GMC Anjum Farhana emphasized the need for collective efforts to raise awareness and strive for a cancer-free society. Dr Shahid Bashir Wani discussed the advancements in oncology, stressing the impact of immunotherapy on survival rates.

Dr Prof Mohammad Ashraf, head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, emphasized the critical importance of early cancer detection for successful treatment, stating that advanced techniques offer higher chances of survival.

Oncologists at the event underscored the vital role of awareness and early detection, noting that at least 50 percent of cancers are treatable, even in advanced stages. Lifestyle adjustments, including diet and physical activity, were identified as crucial for cancer prevention.

Hospital authorities reported approximately 6,000 patients registered at the Department of Radiation Oncology, SMHS Hospital GMC Srinagar, since 2017.

The SKIMS Soura Regional Cancer Center recorded around 14,000 new cancer patients in the last three years, with 4,737 cases reported in 2021.

Union Health Ministry data revealed a total of 51,577 cancer cases in J&K between 2019 and 2022, with 35,623 reported deaths during the same period.

A 2012 SKIMS study attributed the rising cancer incidence to dietary practices, lifestyle choices, and the consumption of high-salt content foods.
