The installation of smart meters in Srinagar has entered its second phase, with a target completion date of October 2023.

This is later than the original target date of March 2023 as directed by the Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta during a review meeting of the power sector in Jammu & Kashmir at the Civil Secretariat on September 27, 2022.

The project is being overseen by the Chief Engineer of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar.

The Chief Secretary had previously stated that Jammu and Kashmir is being given utmost priority in the installation of smart meters and had stressed that 7 lakh meters must be installed and be made operational by March 2023 in Jammu and Srinagar cities.

However, due to logistical and technical challenges, the Chief Engineer has stated that the second phase of installation has already been started and the 2.3 lakh smart meters will be installed by the end of October 2023.

As of now, under the smart metering project, 59000 meters have been installed in Srinagar district.
