The Election Commission of India has issued a notice that requires voters to link their voter ID card with their Aadhaar card. This measure has been taken to ensure transparency and accuracy in the electoral process. The voters can link their cards till March 31, 2024 (from April 1, 2023)*.

The amendment has been made in the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), number S.O. 2803(E), dated the 17th June, 2022, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (5) of section 23 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950).

This notice has come as a part of a series of initiatives taken by the Election Commission to ensure a fair and transparent election process. The move will help in identifying and eliminating duplicate and fraudulent voters from the system, as it will help in identifying people who might be registered to vote in multiple locations or who are not eligible to vote.

The Aadhaar card, which is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), contains the biometric details and personal information of an individual, which includes their photograph, fingerprints, and iris scan. The Voter ID card, on the other hand, is issued by the Election Commission of India and is used to cast a vote during elections. Linking the two cards will help to establish the identity of the voter and prevent any fraudulent activity during the election process.

The Election Commission has urged all eligible voters to complete the linking process before the deadline to avoid any inconvenience during the upcoming elections. Voters can link their Aadhaar card with their Voter ID card online or by visiting their nearest Voter Service Centre.

The move has been welcomed by political parties and citizens alike, as it will help to ensure that the electoral process is transparent and free from any malpractices. With the deadline set to expire on March 31, 2024 (from April 1, 2023)*, voters are advised to complete the linking process at the earliest to avoid any last-minute rush.

*Amendment to the notification has been made by replacing “the 1st April, 2023” with “the 31st March, 2024”.
