Kashmir Prepares For The Worst As Forecast Predicts Heavy Snowfall, Check Report Here

The Kashmir valley is currently experiencing its first major snowfall of the season, with higher reaches receiving fresh snowfall. The town of Gulmarg received 6cm of snowfall in the 24 hours till 8:30 am on Wednesday, according to a meteorological department official.

Other areas such as Pahalgam received a lesser amount of snowfall at 0.3cm during the same time period.

Along with snowfall, Srinagar, Pahalgam and Kupwara also received light rainfall of 0.3mm, 1.1mm and 3.6mm respectively.

The temperature recorded an increase, with mercury settling above sub-zero level at most places, except for Gulmarg and Pahalgam.

According to the meteorological department, the forecast for the next few days predicts widespread moderate snowfall/rain in the plains of Jammu, with heavy snowfall expected over higher reaches.

The forecast also warns of potential disruptions in surface transportation, such as on major highways, and in air transportation and power supply.
The valley is currently under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21st. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30th and February 19th, and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20th to March 1st.
